Boxers & Botts Battle it Out at Kyalami
Saturday saw a very exciting, regional all bike race day. BoxerCup once again joined the Botts, both classes having to make up races for those missed due to resurfacing of tracks.
A great bunch of Botts and BoxerCup guys together, which posed some interesting racing between the various rivals on Ducatis and BMWs.
The weather was kind to everyone on both Friday and Saturday with sunny skies brushing over the track.
Qualifying
In the 1100 class, Wian Erasmus, Lyndhurst Motorrad, took pole position with a lap time of 1' 59.842" followed by fellow Polokwaner Eric Robinson, Fast Bikes, with a lap time of 2' 00.792" in third was Henk Schuiling, Air Systems, and Quintin van Wyk, SJW Motors.
Danie Stassen, SJW motors, on a 1200 put himself between Wian and Eric on the grid.
Race 1
34 bikes lined the grid for the start of race one. Red lights off and racing commenced only to be red flagged before completing one lap due to Wian losing a front end on Wesbank and Ryan van Heerden (Ducati) also loosing it on Wesbank.
The race was restarted with no further serious incidents. There was lots of exciting dices between everyone in the air cooled class (Ducati 1000cc and the tweaked 1200 BMW of Reg Gurnell) and the BoxerCup boys.
Danie finished the race in a respectable 13th position followed by the first 1100 of Eric in 15th position. Second in the 1100 class was Henk just behind Brian Moldenhauer on his retro air cooled Ducati. Third and fourth place went to Polokwane riders Martello van Tonder and Benoist Ollivier better known as Frenchie, who hasn't been seen on the track for a while due to business commitments.
Quintin was unfortunate to run out of fuel about 3 laps from the finish but fortunate enough to grind to a stop in a place on the track that didn't give him too much of a workout to push the bike back to the pits.
Race 2
Race 2 grid position was determined not by the finishing results of the first race like everyone is used to but on the 2nd fastest qualifying time. This is apparently the way they do it in the Botts. This situation was obviously advantageous to some and disadvantageous to other, even Clinton Pienaar moved down to 15th on the grid, never the less it posed for an interesting start.
Once again there was interesting battles and positions changing frequently.
Wian was fortunate to have a revived bike after the fall and it remains debatable whether his ego or ribs were more bruised by the fall in race one. He, never the less, managed a 16th place overall to add 25 points to his already formidable championship lead.
Eric managed a 20th place to finish 2nd in the 1100 class while Quintin, realising that his bike really does go much faster with fuel, finished in 24 position and 3rd in the 1100 class. 4th and 5th went to Henk and Martello respectively.
Danie finished a respectable 12 overall and 1st in the 1200 class adding to his lead in the 1200 championship ahead of team mate Christo Coetzee, SJW Motors.
Overall
Eric celebrated 1st place for the day while Henk took second place and Martello took a third place. With BoxerCup founder rider Noel Gibson taking 4th and Frenchie 5th place.
Most were very pleased with the day's race excitement which ended slightly different than expected but that's what racing's about. It's not over till the Fat Lady has sung.
Championship Standings
Former BoxerCup Champion Wian Erasmus still leads the 1100 points standings ahead of Quintin van Wyk, Henk Schuiling and Eric Robinson. In the 1200 class Danie Stassen leads the challenge followed by fellow lowveld rider Christo Coetzee. With 2 remaining races the battle is on for third place between Henk and Eric.
2008
Things are developing nicely with the inclusion of the BMW F800S in next year's club championship. Suggestions for a new name for BoxerCup are welcomed through the website www.myracing.co.za or by mailing Henk Schuiling at henk@myracing.co.za.
Boxers give Thunderbikes a run for their money!
Zwartkops was once again a hive of activity over the weekend with the Pro Tour Cars, ZX10 Cup, Thunderbikes and BoxerCup racing.
This was the first race meeting for BoxerCup at Zwartkops since the track resurfacing. The track is still smooth but grip levels are up, this was reflected in the lap times of bikes in both the ZX10 Cup, Thunderbikes and BoxerCup. Wian Erasmus did a best lap time of 1'09.8" in race 1 proving that grip levels were quite acceptable. Once again the BoxerCup riders had a lot of fun. Due to Thursday's downpours and some rain on Friday, most thought that we would end up having wet races, but the Universe was kind and gave us great weather for racing.
Qualifying
Qualifying saw 1100 Championship leader, Wian Erasmus, Lyndhurst Motorrad, on a BMW R1100S, giving the Superbikes and 600 cc bikes a run for their money by placing himself 6th on the grid of 24 bikes. Danie Stassen, SJW Motors, placed himself 10th on the grid with the BMW 1200S, hot on his heels was Quintin van Wyk, SJW Motors, on a R1100S in 12 position.
Race1
Race 1 saw Quintin van Wyk with a brief jump start, stopping and ending up with a bad start. Racing was exciting with all the boxers giving the much faster Thunderbikes a hard time. Wian Erasmus managed a very respectable 8th position, Danie Stassen in 10th, Quintin van Wyk in 11th, BoxerCup organiser Henk Schuiling, Air Systems, in 13th and Chris Marais, Meps Fencing, in 17th. In the BoxerCup results it was Wian Erasmus, Danie Stassen, Quintin van Wyk, Henk Schuiling, Chris Marais and Christo Coetzee, SJW Motors on a R1200S in 6th place.
Race 2
Everyone was doing about a second slower in the second race for some or other reason. Never the less, spectators got value for their money with some daring passes with the late braking and fast cornering boxers. Danie Stassen and Wian Erasmus gave some very exciting spectator value by changing the lead, often a few times per lap and the more experienced Wian, eventually beating Danie to the finish line with some very late braking on turn 8 before the pit straight.
On the shorter twisty tracks like Zwartkops the 1200 does not have the same advantage as on the longer faster tracks like Kyalami, Phakisa and East London and Wian took full advantage of this.
Wian managed 7th and Danie 8th place in the Thunderbikes with Quintin van Wyk 10th, Henk Schuiling 13th, Chris Marais 17th and Christo in 22 place.
All racers agreed that it was a lot of fun and excitement with the boxers giving the Thunderbikes more than they bargained on.
Championship Standings
In the 1100 Club Championship standings Wian Erasmus leads with 290 points and is set to take the Ultimate Riders Championship as well, Quintin van Wyk 2nd with 226 points and Henk Schuiling with 183 points. Danie Stassen leads the 1200 Club Championship with 270 points. If the series is scored based on finishing position irrespective of bike then Wian leads with 290 points, Danie with 241 points, Quintin with 190 points and Henk with 162 points.
Next Race
There's been a lot of track and race shuffling due to races being cancelled because of track surfaces. A solution to this was found to include BoxerCup with other race groups. This has led to a lot of exhilarating racing with Ducatis, Hondas, Suzukis and a lot of other makes in Botts and Thunderbikes. The next BoxerCup race is on the 13th of October at Kyalami and racing with Regional racing in the Botts class.
2008
BoxerCup will be doing a name change for next year to accommodate the new BMW F800S. This is bound to bring back a lot of the old riders and spectacular dices. The envisaged format would be a separate F800S series in the Cape and a separate F800S and R1100S series on the reef. 4 or 5 races will be combined between the Cape Town boys and the reef riders, many of which come from Polokwane and Nelspruit to declare a National Club Champion in the F800S class. More information will be posted on www.myracing.co.za in the next few weeks.

Carel du Toit Benefit Race 8 Sept 2007
By RODNEY HILES
AS part of the Carel du Toit Benefit inaugural motorcycle rally in East London at the weekend, the BMW Boxer Cup Championship Series was invited to participate.
Boxer Cup co-ordinator Henk Schuiling saw it as a great opportunity to slip in an extra championship round and to enjoy the thrill of the East London circuit again.
In addition, local competitors were invited to participate and add to the enjoyment, while current National Superbike Championship leader Arushen Moodley and national 600cc rider, Kyle Vianello, both from Port Elizabeth, joined the fun.
Boxer Cup is a single model championship competition in which all competitors are on similar BMW 2-cylinder motorcycles and they are generally no match for multi-cylinder Japanese machines.
However, in the right hands, the slower BMWs can be highly competitive as was seen on Saturday.
There was never a doubt that Moodley, Jayson Lamb, Chris van Vuuren and others would outclass the BMs, but 23-year-old Danie Stassen from Nelspruit made life difficult for locals Pierre le Roux and Shane Hempel on 1000cc Kawasakis as well as Vianello and Robert Morf on their 600s.
Stassen made his BMW do tricks many top riders only dream of.
Further back the battle for 9th place had its own competition with BMW riders Quinton van Wyk, Wian Erasmus, Eric Robinson and Aran van Niekerk keeping rally-participants and other spectators on their feet with scary side-by-side tactics into corners.
Positions changed and it was impossible to predict the final outcome. However, Van Wyk triumphed in heat 1, ahead of Erasmus and Robinson. Le Roux squeezed in ahead of Stassen, followed by Vianello, Hempel and Morf.
Van Vuuren did not make it to heat 2, which was again dominated by the devastatingly quick Moodley, followed by Lamb, then a very determined Vianello who pushed in ahead of Stassen, but this time with Hempel close behind the fast BMW rider.
Le Roux had to settle for 6th, ahead of Morf, but the BMW brigade fighting for 8th place again produced breathtaking action with spectacular consequences.
First Chris Marais turned on the gas too soon exiting Beacon Bend onto the Main Straight on lap 3, and dumped his machine on the outside of the corner. But he was soon back in the saddle and lost only four seconds.
Then came the “off” of the day when, on the final lap, a determined Van Wyk took his front tyre beyond its adhesion limit in the Sweep, slid off the circuit and struck the tyre-wall behind Water World, which in turn propelled the bike another 30 metres along the embankment while losing its seat, fairings and fuel tank. Van Wyk emerged with a sore thumb and a small grass-burn on the back of his neck.
Celebrations continued long into the night after a combined prize-giving for competitors and rallyists who all joined in the spirit of the fund-raiser, making it an event worth remembering and also ensuring it grows into an annual spectacular.

Baffalo City, Botts, BoxerCup & Whale Watching
BoxerCup SA Race Report
East London Wesbank Super Series Triton Express All Bike Race Day
Thursday's practice started with much enthusiasm. Everyone was eager to get on to the track after the cancelled Polokwane race.
The weather was perfect and set the scene for some great racing on Saturday.
It was decided that BoxerCup would race with the m Cubed Racing, Battle of the Twins (Botts). The main reason for this was to accommodate the ZX10 Masters cup. The ZX 10 Masters cup ended up not racing on Saturday, which was just as well as the programme was very tight and had not really allowed for any incidents happening on the day.
The wind was howling on Friday and gave a very interesting dynamic to racing on the fastest track in the country, otherwise it was another perfect day in East London.
Friday's practice sessions saw Polokwane rider Wian Erasmus, Lyndhurst Motorrad, on a BMW R1100S, posting the fastest times in the BoxerCup, followed closely by Lowveld rider, Danie Stassen, SJW Motors, on a BMW R1200S. In hot pursuit was another Polokwane rider, Eric Robinson, Fast Bikes followed by Pretoria riders, Quintin van Wyk, SJW Motors and Henk Schuiling, Air Systems.
The BoxerCup times represented respectable 14th to 23rd out of the then field of 32, made up of Ducatis and Aprillias.
Qualifying
Qualifying saw Danie Stassen take pole for BoxerCup and a very respectable 11th place on the grid, followed by Wian Erasmus and Quintin van Wyk, 13th and 14th place respectively on the grid. That was followed by Eric Robinson in 18th, Henk Schuiling in 22nd, Lowveld rider Chris Marais, MEPS, 24th, Polokwane rider Benoist Ollivier, Silicon Smelters, 26th, Cape Town rider Tony Sparg, Auto Atlantic Motorrad / Aqua Clear, 30th. Polokwane rider Martello van Tonder, Martello Civils, had to settle starting from the back of the grid due to being penalised for his race number not being visible.
Some riders had some fun going off the track onto the grass as they tried to get to grips with this fast track, but fortunately no damage done.
Race 1
The start of the first race saw a lot of riders not getting off the mark as they would have wanted to, posing a hair raising scenario for some of the riders that had to avoid the stallers. East London's grid is extremely narrow and makes for a very close side by side start.
Spectators were treaded to some very close racing indeed between the Beemers, Ducatis and Aprillias. The Boxers often out braking their rivals and out cornering the Italian bikes. The BMWs are on par with the air cooled Ducatis but have a serious power disadvantage compared to the rest of the Italian bikes.
Chris Marais nearly had a close encounter of the Ducati kind when Peter Bosch's bike came back across the track after Peter went off the track at Rifle. Sean Olfsen passed Chris only to slam into the riderless bike, taking himself out in the process.
The boxers normally hit the rev limiter in 6th gear at Rifle at a speed of about 235 km/h. Chris was shaken but not stirred. The safety car came out and everyone followed the safety car for 3 laps while medics attended to Peter and Sean and the rack was cleaned, before racing could commence.
The first race saw Danie Stassen in the lead of the boxers and 10th in the Botts, Wian 2nd and 14th respectively, Quintin 3rd and 18th, Henk Schuiling 4th and 19th, Martello fighting his way from the back of the grid to a 5th and 20th, Benoist Ollivier 6th and 21st, Chris Marais 7th and 22nd, Tony Sparg 8th and 25th, and Christo Coetzee, SJW Motors, 9th and 28th. Eric had to settle watching the race when his bike encountered fuel pump problems in the first lap.
Race 2
The start of the second race was even more hectic than the first and saw more stalled riders, start line accidents, narrow escapes and some riders going of the track at Potters, another reason why balls are required for potters. Spectators were once again treaded to some of the most awesome racing of the day.
The first BoxerCup positions were once again taken by the trio of Danie, Wian and Quintin in 11th, 12th and 14th respectively followed by Eric, 18th, who's bike was repaired between races with a helping hand of Henk, Martello 19th, Benoist 21st, Henk 22nd whose bike suffered a broken rear sub frame mounting but managed to finish the race, Chris 23rd, Tony 25th, and Christo 27th. BoxerCup results not too shabby in the total field of 35 Botts and BoxerCup bikes.
Overall
Over results were Danie, Wian, Quintin, Martello, Benoist, Henk, Chris, Tony, Christo and Eric. Both Botts and BoxerCup racers agreed that everyone had interesting exciting racing and had a lot of fun and enjoyment from pitting the German bikes to the Italian bikes.

New Website, Blog and Buffalo
New BoxerCup Web Site & Blog
The exciting news, apart from the East London racing this weekend, we have a new site and a blog. Hopefully this will be convenient and save you time, especially the new site as a lot of value added links have been added.
The new site can be visited by clicking www.myracing.co.za and the blog can be seen, and comments lodged, at www.myboxercup.blogspot.com. Test ride / click them and send me feedback and suggestion. It's been a huge, exciting learning curve and will no doubt continue to be.
The reason for the website name change is to be give slightly more flexibility to add more "general" racing and to ultimately let the sun shine on everyone and make it much easier for any user to get the any relevant information regarding racing.
Isn't it always, even with Google, such a pain and time consuming exercise to find relevant information like tracks, rider or racing training, track days, photos, etc? So isn't it high time to have a site is not just for BoxerCup racers and fans, but for anyone interested in biking and racing.
After all, BoxerCup is for any rider that want to use his road going sportboxer S BMW for racing as well. Fun, affordable, safe racing. A lot more useful links will be added in due course.
Instead of sending you long e-mails, like I'm busy doing, go check the BoxerCup site and blog now and tell me what you think. Critical commentary especially welcome, otherwise complacency might just knock on the door, and we don't want that, do we?
BoxerCup Buffalo - Wesbank Super Series & Triton Express Race Day
The disappointment with the cancellation of the 2 June Polekwane race has no doubt been forgotten with the excitement of the imminent East London breakaway and racing. I know a few guys have already left for EL. Wishing you a safe and fun journey and likewise for the rest, traveling tomorrow and the next few days.
About 140 bikes have entered for the different race categories for race day. It's bound to be a spectacular day for riders and spectators alike.
Full TV cocoverages provided thanks to Wesbank and mCubed Racing.
Gotta get outa here, see ya at the track. :-)

Thought For The Night
When the mind is full of memories and preoccupied by the future, it misses the freshness of the present moment. In this way we fail to recognise the luminous simplicity of mind that is always present behind the veils of thought.
Have an awesome week.
Henk
PS Don't forget your binoculars to hopefully do some whale watching from the pit roof.

New BoxerCup Racing Website
After spending a lot of time and effort, burning midnight oil, playing around and experimenting with various software and technologies I have decided to try the following.
To do press releases, rider and supporter correspondence via e-mail and this blog and a clever autoresponder system, this all in turn coupled to www.myRacing.co.za website.
The new myRacing website has been created for primarily for BoxerCup riders and supporters. The site will also be of value to other biking enthusiasts. A lot of links have been added that have relevance to racing and biking in general.
The idea of the site is to give you an unbiased portal for interesting information and gateway to other interesting sites that we often battle to find. For instance if you want to have a look at a certain racetrack simply click on circuits / tracks and you'll be directed to the applicable website.
As I go along playing with more technology and listening to more people, of what they'd want on the site, the site will change, not just the content.
You may post comments so play around and please give my your feedback.
